Ann Shoket

Editor-in-Chief, Content Strategist, Millennial Expert,
Ann Shoket is a trailblazing senior media executive who has brought two major publications to number one in the teen category across every platform. For more than 10 years, she has been a key architect in shaping the media landscape and national conversation among millennials during a time of major transformation in both the media industry and the lives of young women. Forbes has named Shoket one of the “Most Powerful US Fashion Magazine Editors.” She has appeared regularly as a thought leader for millennial women on Good Morning America, Today, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The View, CNN, Access Hollywood, and E! News, and she was a guest judge for four seasons on America’s Next Top Model.
As editor-in-chief of Seventeen from 2007 to 2014, Shoket led a period of great editorial and digital innovation at this iconic fashion and beauty publication and the most profitable years of Hearst’s ownership. Shoket led the magazine to become the number-one teen magazine on the newsstand within her first year while spearheading aggressive cross-platform programming and diversification of revenue. Shoket designed groundbreaking digital campaigns around the most important issues facing young women today, ensuring Seventeen remained an important rite of passage that helped 13 million readers become confident young women.
With an editorial strategy of “Seventeen Everywhere,” Shoket made Seventeen the first and the leader on many platforms. She relaunched Seventeen’s video strategy on YouTube in 2014, driving a 300% increase in subscribers to the brand’s channel within the first six months. She also forged a high-profile partnership with the White House to promote initiatives for young women’s leadership. She built innovative television partnerships with MTV, ABC Family, The CW, E!, and Lifetime. In addition, Shoket oversaw the creation of Seventeen for the iPhone—a first-of-its-kind app experience that unified all of the brand’s platforms into a single mobile feed. Her strategy drove seventeen.com to record-breaking traffic and engagement. In 2014 Seventeen was named Adweek’s “Hottest Teen Magazine” and “Hottest Magazine on Social Media.”
Before Seventeen, Shoket launched several publications. She was executive editor of CosmoGIRL!, which she helped launch in 1999 (achieving Adweek’s “Startup of the Year”) and bring to number one on the newsstand. Before that, Shoket launched a new section for Parade’s teen spin-off, React, as well as her own independent ezine, Tagmag.com, at the beginning of the dotcom boom. She began her career as a reporter working with renowned journalist Steven Brill at The American Lawyer. She graduated with a BA, cum laude, from New York University.
